A time-over-threshold based approach for particle identification with the ATLAS TRT detector — Klaus Desch1, Markus Jüngst2, •Martin Schultens1, and Simone Zimmermann1 — 1University of Bonn — 2CERN
While passing through a medium, charged particles lose energy due to ionization as described by the Bethe-Bloch formula. Since this energy loss (dE/dx) is dependent on βγ=p/m, it can be used for particle identification.
The outermost part of the ATLAS Inner Detector is the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). The track reconstruction in this detector is based on drift time measurement in gas-filled straw tubes. The Time-Over-Threshold (TOT) of the read-out signal of a TRT hit is correlated with the specific energy loss of the ionizing particle. Combining the TOT information of several hits leads to a track-based variable, which can be used for estimating the dE/dx of the track.
In this presentation different approaches for the determination of a TOT-based dE/dx variable are explored. Additionally the extraction of a Time-Over-Threshold from the detector read-out is optimized. The different versions are compared with respect to the resulting separation power between different particles.
