Tau Identification Efficiency Measurement in the ATLAS Experiment using a Z→ττ Tag and Probe sample — •Federico Scutti, William Davey, and Jochen Dingfelder — Physikalisches Institut der Universitaet Bonn
The talk is focused on a fitting method for the measurement of the τ identification efficiency, in the ATLAS experiment, using a sample of Z→ττ. These events are selected with a tag-and-probe method in which a τ decays in the leptonic channel (tag) and the other τ in hadrons (probe).
Distributions of characteristic variables of τ decays, such as the number of tracks originated by the decay of the probe τ, can be fitted using template functions to model the signal and the background contributions.
The fit is performed with the distributions before and after the identification process has been performed. The templates can be obtained from the Monte Carlo simulations for the signal, and using data driven techniques for the background.
This new method is expected to increase the precision of this measurement with respect to an older method which does not employ a fit to any distribution of τ decays variables.
