Trigger Combination Method for Jet Eta-Intercalibration at ATLAS — Alessandra Baas and •Yuriy Davygora — Universität Heidelberg, Kirchhoff-Institut für Physik, Im Neuenheimer Feld 227, 69120 Heidelberg, Deutschland
For any physical or performance analysis, an unbiased data sample is required. One possible source of systematical bias is the trigger selection. To eliminate this bias, usually, for every investigated range of e.g. transverse momentum of the studied physical object, the sample is selected by a trigger which is fully efficient in the given range and delivers most statistics. Sometimes, however, this statistics is not enough to obtain the needed precision such that combining samples selected by several triggers may yield more statistics.
The different trigger samples must be combined correctly to obtain the true distributions of investigated quantities. The method discussed here is the so called exclusion method. It is tested by applying it to the problem of jet eta-intercalibration of the ATLAS calorimeter. The goal of the latter is to achieve equal calorimeter response to hadronic jets of equal transverse momentum in all calorimeter regions by studying the balance between the two leading jets in dijet events. The method is shown to deliver results consistent with official results obtained by currently standard methods, while providing smaller statistical uncertainties.
