Beam Halo Cleaning and Machine Protection in the LHC — •Daniel Wollmann — CERN, Geneva, Switzerland
In 2011 the LHC reached with ∼ 120 MJ one third of its design stored energy per beam (360 MJ) at half of its design particle momentum (3.5 TeV, nominal: 7 TeV) and two third of its nominal beam intensity (∼ 2.2 × 1014 p, nominal: ∼ 3.2 × 1014 p). The magnetic fields created by more than 1200 superconducting main bending magnets keep these high intensity beams on their trajectory. To safely operate the LHC the coaction of several sophisticated protection systems is needed. One of these is the LHC collimation system. Unavoidable losses of small fractions of the beam must be intercepted by collimators before they cause the superconducting magnets to quench. In addition collimators provide passive protection against damage in magnets or other sensitive parts of the machine due to (fast) losses of major parts of the beam in case of a failure, e.g. in the magnet or the beam injection/extraction systems of the LHC.
In this presentation the performance of the LHC collimation system during the first two years of LHC operation is reviewed and planned upgrades are discussed. Furthermore the LHC’s current limitation in particle momentum is addressed and mitigation strategies are presented. Finally an overview of the coming years of LHC operation and upgrade works is given.
