Beyond IceCube: Design study for an optical detector extension of the IceCube neutrino detector — •David Altmann, Martin Bissok, Marius Wallraff, and Christopher Wiebusch — III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen
The construction of the 86-string IceCube detector at the South Pole was completed in December 2010. IceCube searches for astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV and PeV range with unprecedented sensitivity. In case of the discovery of a weak signal, it is desirable to increase the sensitivity. In this study we investigate the gain in sensitivity by enlarging the detector volume with about 6000 additional optical sensors, which are based on well-established IceCube technology. We investigate the effective area and reconstruction accuracy for different geometrical configurations and compare them to those of IceCube.
