Application of GPU's in astroparticle physics — •Tomasz Fuchs — TU Dortmund
Monte-Carlo simulation is one of the main parts of the data analysis in modern astroparticle physics. Large compute clusters are used because these simulations require a big computing power. During the past 9 years the computing power of GPU's ( Graphics Processing Unit ) exceeded the computing power of CPU's in some fields of application by far. I will give a short overview of the application field of GPU's and computing speed. As application i will show a comparison during the lepton propagation with PROPOSAL (PRopagator with Optimal Precision and Optimised Speed for All Leptons). PROPOSAL is the successor of MMC which is used in the IceCube experiment. Solving propagation-integrals using GPU's can achieve far better results considering the computation duration and numerical stability.
