Simple Experiments with the Laser Beam — •Ioannis Sianoudis, Georgios Mitsou, and Nikolaos Merlemis — TEI of Athens, Dep. of Physics Chem.&MT, Ag. Spyridonos, 12210 Egaleo, Greece
Simple experiments using a Laser beam for making spectacular presentations were designed and performed to increase interest in students mainly of artistic directions, which usually have a lower technological background and motivation for physics. These experiments include the technique for handling of the Laser beam in making Laser shows. Specifically, the designed system consists of two pulsating, electromagnetically driven mirrors, as to produce enlarged Lissajous figures, and thus being able to measure ratios of frequencies and phase differences. In addition, the Laser beam characteristics were measured, including the profile, the spectral distribution and purity, the radiation intensity and the power density on the scanned surface. These experiments are part of an educational package which is aimed at students, especially those belonging to departments of arts (Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art, Graphic Design, Architecture), to understand the increasingly applied Laser technology both in diverse spectroscopic methods as well as in its successfully application in cleaning surfaces of objects with cultural interest. On the other hand the performed spectacle from a well and carefully controlled manipulation of the Laser beam at the Physics Laboratory, creates impressions to the students, attracts their interest and awakens an additional motivation for a deeper engagement with physics and related technology.
