Cooling and trapping erbium atoms — •Patrizia Weiß, Florian Jessen, Claus Zimmermann, and József Fortágh — Physikalisches Institut der Universität Tübingen, Center for Collective Quantum Phenomena and their Applications
Erbium is a rare-earth element with a complex energy level structure, and a range of possible laser cooling transitions, including very strong and narrow transition lines. Erbium has a large magnetic moment of 7µB. This property makes it interesting for studying magnetic interactions between cold atoms and superconducting nanostructures.
We present our experimental progress towards cooling and trapping erbium and the current status of the setup, that is compatible with cooling nanostructures to cryogenic temperatures.
