Cosmic rays entering the Earth's atmosphere are able to produce a secondary particle cascade which itself is affecting e.g. the atmospheric ion balance (see Dorman, 2004 and references in there). By using the GEANT4 based simulation code PLANETOCOSMICS we here investigate the Cosmic Ray Induced Ionization (CRII) due to galactic cosmic rays as well as due to solar energetic protons produced in Ground Level Events (GLEs). We present our calculations for several GLEs and compare our results to previous computations by e.g. Usoskin et al. (2006, 2010).
