Magnetic Field and Current Profile Diagnostics for the VINETA II Magnetic Reconnection Experiment — •Hannes Bohlin1, Olaf Grulke1, and Thomas Klinger1,2 — 1MPI for Plasma Physics, EURATOM Association, Greifswald — 2Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University, Greifswald
Magnetic reconnection is a topological rearrangement of magnetic fields through the breaking and reconnection of magnetic field lines. It plays an important role in many space plasmas, such as solar flares, as well as in some laboratory processes. Essential to the study of reconnection is the ability to characterize the magnetic field and the current density. Diagnostic tools for magnetic field and current measurements, as being used in the VINETA II (V.II) experiment, are presented. An array of induction coils will be used for determining the spatiotemporal evolution of the magnetic field, and hence parameters such as the reconnection rate and current density. Current profile measurements will be done using a small Rogowski coil that can be scanned through the entire plasma cross section using a high precision positioning system.
