Gas and vibrational temperatures of a magnetic X-point discharge — •Tsanko Vaskov Tsankov and Uwe Czarnetzki — Institute for Plasma and Atomic Physics, Ruhr-University Bochum, 44780 Germany
Measurements of the molecular hydrogen Fulcher-α bands have been performed in a magnetic X-point discharge. The interpretation of the line intensities provides the rotational and vibrational temperatures in the source and the gas temperature is inferred from the rotational one. The results reveal that the gas temperature is increasing with the RF power, while the vibrational temperature remains relatively constant in the studied range of RF powers.
Further, a concept for existence of an optimum vibrational temperature for the volume negative hydrogen ion production is introduced. Estimations show that this optimum vibrational temperature lies close to the experimentally measured one, supporting the idea that the source design offers certain advantages over the classical ones in terms of negative ion production.
