New effective absorption coefficients for radiation transport calculations in argon iron equilibrium plasmasMartin Wendt, Dirk Uhrlandt, and •Detlef Loffhagen — INP Greifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, 17489 Greifswald

MHD modelling can be used as a tool to optimize gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes. In order to improve the quality of the modelling results, it is desirable to describe the radiation transport as correct as possible, because the energy transport due to radiation dominates the energy balance at the arc center. Consequently, it has a strong influence on the radial temperature profile. Recent publications show that in the high current phase of pulsed GMAW processes of iron using argon as shielding gas the arc core filled with iron has a lower temperature than the argon envelope [1,2]. It was suggested that this behaviour may be caused by radiation transport [3]. Using a set of spectral line data of argon and iron with calibrated Stark widths and experimentally determined temperature profiles we compare exact radiation transport calculations in cylindrical symmetry with those of the P1 model. Different strategies of forming averaged absorption coefficients are discussed. In particular, it was found that the usual method of using bands containing whole spectral lines results in a strong underestimation of the reabsorption of radiation in regions of low temperature.
