Kinetic effects in an atmospheric pressure RF He-N2 discharge — •Denis Eremin, Torben Hemke, Ralf Peter Brinkmann, and Thomas Mussenbrock — Theoretische Elektrotechnik, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Bochum, Deutschland
Recently, the discharges in gases under atmospheric pressure have acquired great interest due to their technological feasibility. However, it is complicated to apply the existing diagnostic techniques to study such discharges due to their small size. Therefore, numerical simulations can be especially valuable in helping to understand the phenomena taking place in the atmospheric discharges. In this work we study a He-N2 discharge under atmospheric pressure with a novel self-consistent hybrid numerical scheme, whereby ions are accounted for using a fluid model and the electrons are described in the fully kinetic framework. The code is accelerated using parallelization of the kinetic part on a graphics card (GPU). We discuss the physics of the discharge and pay special attention to its aspects associated with the kinetic behaviour of the electrons.
