Numerical studies regarding the new divertor design in ASDEX Upgrade with SOLPS5.0 — •Felix Reimold, Andrea Scarabosio, Marco Wischmeier, Albrecht Herrmann, David Coster, and ASDEX Upgrade Team — Max-Planck Institut für Plasmaphysik, Boltzmannstr. 2, 85748 Garching, Germany

A new design using solid tungsten tiles for the divertor of ASDEX Upgrade is currently prepared. The possibility of changing the divertor geometry shall be used to increase the conductance between the pump chamber - housing the cryopump - and the volume below the baffle dome in order to increase the pumping efficiency. An increased pumping capability should provide access to lower plasma densities and more effective density control in ASDEX Upgrade discharges.

SOLPS5.0 and EIRENE (version 2001) modeling is used to assess the impact of the divertor geometry change on pumping efficiency, plasma performance and operational space. Results indicate an increase in pumping efficiency of the new divertor with respect to baffle dome neutral pressure of about 50%. Concomitantly, the simulations indicate a reduction of the baffle dome neutral pressure and gas puff achieving the same separatrix densities. Hence, particle throughput via the outer divertor plasma is reduced. The accessibility of low plasma density will be addressed.
