The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in helium was studied by means of temporal and phase resolved surface charge measurements using the Pockels effect, spatio-temporally resolved cross-correlation spectroscopy (CCS) and electrical measurements. In this study, the diffuse mode was investigated. Depending on the discharge cell configuration, e.g. gap distance, dielectrics and applied voltage signal, the discharge can operate either in the Townsend-like mode or in the glow-like mode. In small gaps (less than 1 mm) with a sinusoidal applied voltage, only the Townsend-like mode can be generated. But, in dependence on the shape of the applied voltage signal, the glow-like mode can be realized, too. In case of a rectangle voltage signal, the discharge operates in the glow-like mode, probably due to the fast rise and fall time of the voltage signal. Using a sawtooth voltage signal, both modes appear separately in one period. The presented results show clearly the correlation between transported and deposited charge and the optical emission.
