Novel First-Principles Simulation Methods for Hot, Dense Plasmas — •Burkhard Militzer — University of California, Berkeley
We develop an all-electron path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method for warm dense matter and apply it to study hot, dense water and carbon plasmas. We thereby extend PIMC simulations beyond hydrogen and helium to elements with core electrons. PIMC pressures, internal energies, and pair-correlation functions compare well with density functional molecular dynamics at lower temperatures and enable the construction of a consistent equation of state over the pressure-temperature range of 1 Mbar - 50 Mbar and 104- 109 K. PIMC results converge to the Debye-Hückel limiting law at high temperatures.
