Organic solar cells (OSC) have recently made strong progress, achieving power conversion efficiencies beyond the critical value of 10% in the laboratory. Up to now, the race between the two main approaches - solution processed polymers or vacuum processed small molecules - is not decided, yet. We here report on our advances in the field of vacuum processed small molecule based organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. We have achieved a power conversion efficiency of 7.7% in a single junction device using a methylated quinquethiophene derivative as photoactive donor material in combination with the acceptor C60. This value is so far the highest efficiency ever reported for a small molecule based device with disclosed active materials. We demonstrate the important issues to achieve this value and give insight into the important processing issues for small molecule based OPV devices.
