3D Particle-in-Cell Simulation for the Electron Source of PITZ — •Ye Chen, Erion Gjonaj, Wolfgang Müller, and Thomas Weiland — TEMF, Schloßgartenstraße 8, 64289 Darmstadt, Germany

The Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY Zeuthen (PITZ) is dedicated to the optimization of laser driven RF guns as applied for free electron lasers (FELs) and linear colliders. Space charge and external electromagnetic fields dominated processes inside the photo injector contribute significantly to the emittance of a charged electron beam. Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation studies by use of the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) codes need to be performed in order to understand the effects resulting additionally from the surrounding components along the beam line and further to investigate the emittance manipulation inside the injector. For the simulation of beam dynamics inside the injector a 3D CST model of the complete structure including the external solenoids, 1.6 cell cavity and subsequent beam tubes down to one meter total length from the cathode has been set up. Depending on a very fine mesh resolution for PIC simulations, preliminary results have shown possibilities of convergence in terms of the rms beam size at a distance of 210 mm downstream from the cathode, by utilizing a particle distribution for a bunch charge of 1nC. Cross-checking the results with A Space Charge Tracking Algorithm (ASTRA) simulations showed that they could be convergent to each other by further enhancing the current grid resolution. Due to memory limitations and long processing times a suited grid setting has to be found in the next steps. The simulation scheme used so far gives way to further improvements.
