Studies of very forward phase space in heavy ion collisions at LHCRalf Ulrich, Colin Baus, Hauke Wöhrmann, and •Igor Katkov — KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany

A strong heavy ion program adds to the success of the LHC. The LHC experiments have so far collected large data sets of PbPb collisions at 2.76 TeV per participating nucleon. The CMS experiment has an advantage of unprecedented angular coverage extending well into the beam fragmentation region. Extensive forward calorimetry including CASTOR (in the pseudorapidity range from -6.6 to -5.2) complements the coverage provided by the barrel and endcap detectors. Hence CMS is a perfect laboratory to uncover the long-awaited signatures of a possible new parton dynamics regime at low-x. Benchark measurements can be performed for events of different geometries ranging from very central to very peripheral collisions of nucleus. The results are comparable to the most forward measurements at RHIC. Presented results are confronted with hadronic interaction models as implemented in standard collider physics generators and generators used in cosmic-ray physics
