Measurement of the Top Mass in a Threshold Scan at Linear Colliders — •Michal Tesař, Katja Seidel, and Frank Simon — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München, Germany
The top quark mass is a very important parameter for the Standard Model, providing information on the consistency of the model at high energy scales and important input to precision calculations. The relatively clean experimental environment at proposed future linear colliders such as the ILC and CLIC, together with detectors optimized for precise vertex and jet reconstruction allows top quark identification with little residual background. The precise energy control at such a machine allows to perform a scan of the top quark pair production threshold. By fitting the resulting cross-section dependence with higher-order theoretical predictions, several important physical parameters can be obtained, including the theoretically well-defined 1S mass of the top quark. A simulation of the top threshold scan has been done for both linear collider technologies, the ILC and CLIC. The results, which show that the top mass can be measured with 40 MeV statistical precision and with a total error of 100 MeV or below, will be presented.
