Measurement of the top quark mass using the decay length and lepton pT methods — •Christian Jung — TU Dortmund
Presented are two approaches for a measurement of the top quark mass which both exploit the fact that the boost of a final state object will be higher if the top mass is greater. The one observable is the flight length of the bottom hadron from the top decay, measured as the transverse distance between the primary vertex of the event and a secondary vertex inside a jet. The other observable is the transverse momentum of the isolated lepton stemming from the W decay. By estimating location parameters (e.g. the mean value) of the distributions for several simulated top quark masses a calibration curve can be build for measuring the top quark mass from data.
Since both methods have different systematic limitations a combination of them can be used to reduce systematic uncertainties. The application of a combined approach of both observables to ATLAS data and steps towards a precise measurement of the mass of the top quark are discussed.
