Discovery of a new Higgs-like particle in the diphoton decay channel with ATLAS — •Jana Schaarschmidt and Louis Fayard — LAL, Universite-Paris Sud, 91898 Orsay, France
The Higgs boson is predicted by the BEH mechanism to explain electroweak symmetry breaking. Although the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay into two photons is only 0.2% at the low mass region, this decay channel is very promising as it offers an excellent mass resolution and a large signal event yield.
A search for the Higgs boson decaying to two photons is performed on the full 2011 dataset and at least 13/fb of 2012 data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. A new particle is observed at a mass of about 126.5 GeV and with a significance exceeding 5σ. The talk contains a description of the H→γγ analysis and also first results of the spin measurement.
