Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion in the H → W±W∓(*) → ℓ+νℓ′−ν′ channel — Karl Jakobs, Tuan Vu Anh, and •Andreas Walz — Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg
The H → W±W∓(*) → ℓ+νℓ′−ν′ decay mode is an interesting channel in the search for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. It features a low mass resolution but a significant signal rate. The H → W±W∓(*) → ℓ+νℓ′−ν′ channel has contributed to the publication released by the ATLAS Collaboration in July 2012 reporting about the discovery of a new boson with a mass around 126 GeV. Specifically considering the Higgs boson production mechanism with the second largest cross section at the LHC, the vector-boson fusion (VBF), one can purely probe the Higgs boson coupling to massive vector bosons. Furthermore, the VBF mode provides a clear signal topology which can be exploited to achieve a very high signal-to-background ratio. The talk summarizes the latest results of the search for the Higgs boson production via the VBF mechanism in the H → W±W∓(*) → ℓ+νℓ′−ν′ channel based on data collected in 2011 and 2012 by the ATLAS experiment. An optimization study of the VBF analysis event selection is presented that scans over a multidimensional grid defined in the space of cut thresholds on kinematic variables.
