A search for high-mass resonances decaying to tau-pairs in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector — •William Davey1 and ATLAS Collaboration2 — 1Bonn University, Bonn, Germany — 2CERN, Geneva, Switzerland
Many extensions of the Standard Model, motivated by grand unification, predict additional heavy gauge bosons. As lepton universality is not necessarily a requirement for these new gauge bosons, it is essential to search in all decay modes. In this talk, a search for high-mass resonances decaying into tau pairs with the ATLAS experiment is presented. The sensitivity of the search is optimised using simulated samples of Z' bosons of the Sequential Standard Model. The taus themselves can decay either leptonically or hadronically, leading to three ditau decay modes: hadron-hadron, lepton-hadron and lepton-lepton. All ditau decay modes are analysed and combined to maximise the sensitivity of the search.
