X-ray calibration of the CMS pixel detector — Matteo Centis Vignali, Erika Garutti, Johannes Haller, •Tobias Lapsien, Jennifer Sibille, and Georg Steinbrück — Universität Hamburg
In 2016/17, the pixel detector at CMS will be replaced by an improved detector system which will allow for efficient running until around 2020. The new pixel detector will contain four barrel layers and three disks for added redundancy.
A new pixel readout chip will be used, featuring added buffering to reduce dead time and digital readout to reduce power consumption. The read out chip has an internal calibration circuit that offers the possibility to inject charge similar to the collected charge in a sensor. As part of the module production procedure, the internal circuit is calibrated using x-ray fluorescence lines with known energies. This calibration procedure has to be done with 350 modules, making an automated procedure necessary. Furthermore, it is required to stabilize the temperature and to control the humidity to calibrate the module also at low temperatures.
In this talk, the calibration procedure is described in detail, and results from our experimental set-up in Hamburg are shown comparing two different methods.
