Measuring the photon detection efficiency of SiPMs with a multipurpose light source — •Tim Enzweiler, Thomas Hebbeker, Carsten Heidemann, and Markus Merschmeyer — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen University
Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are semiconductor-based detectors which are capable of detecting single photons. Due to this property SiPMs are very attractive to astroparticle and high-energy physics experiments. Interesting characteristics are crosstalk, after pulsing and thermal noise as well as electrical characteristics which are recovery time, gain and pulse shape. Very important properties are the relative and absolute photon detection efficiency.
We have developed a fully automated optical test stand that is capable of measuring the temperature and overvoltage dependence of these characteristics. It contains devices for pulsing single wavelength LEDs as well as for constant white light. The performance of the light source is especially important for measurements of the photon detection efficiency, the spectral range and the linearity of SiPMs. The talk will present the design status/performance of this light source.
