Investigation on the energy and mass composition of cosmic rays using LOPES radio data — •Nunzia Palmieri — Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)
Key goal in cosmic ray physics is a precise reconstruction of both energy and mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The signature of the type of primary cosmic rays as well as the reconstruction of the total energy of the air showers are explored in the coherent radio emission from extensive air showers, detected in the MHz frequency range.
The LOPES experiment, a digital interferometric antenna array, has successfully been detecting radio events in the MHz frequencies since 2003. LOPES has the big advantage of taking data in coincidence with the particle detector array KASCADE-Grande.
For the purpose of this analysis, a set of LOPES measured events is reproduced with the latest CoREAS radio simulation code.
Based on simulation predictions, a method (slope-method) which leverages the properties of the radio lateral distribution function to achieve the two fundamental air shower parameters is developed and directly applied on measurements. The possibility to reconstruct both energy and Xmax of air showers using radio data with relatively small uncertainties will be presented.
