Microwave heating with the new 14 GHz system at the stellarator TJ-K — •Michael Løiten, Alf Köhn, Stefan Wolf, and Mirko Ramisch — Institut für Plasmaforschung, Universität Stuttgart
The new 6 kW 14 GHz microwave heating system with a low-loss transmission line has been successfully installed at the stellarator TJ-K. The first plasmas have been created, and parametric scans have been performed with a variety of diagnostics. These includes bolometers, diagnostics for detection of EM waves in the optical range, a microwave interferometer and Langmuir probes. At the moment, further shots are made to classify the behavior of the plasma within this parameter space.
To operate at the fundamental electron cyclotron resonance frequency corresponding to 14 GHz, it was necessary to upgrade the magnetic field system at TJ-K. It is now possible to generate plasmas at background magnetic fields up to 500 mT. With oversized circular waveguides losses in the transmission line have been minimized. The oversized waveguides required the usage of numerically optimized bends, which have been designed and constructed at IPF. Details about the transmission line and the new plasma regime will be given in this presentation.
