The nonlocal growth of thin films due to shadowing is investigated in an 1+1 dimensional model. Shadowing depends on the exposure angle and growth normal to the surface which are both highly nonlinear functions of the surface height perturbation themselves. The effects of a given surface height perturbations on the exposure angle and normal growth wavenumber spectra and their nonlinear interactions are studied by means of numerical and experimental surface morphology data. The quantitative impact of roughening due to shadowing can be calculated. It is found that shadowing can be considered as quasi-linear by the cross-correlation between surface height and exposure angle perturbations.
