Voyager 1 at the Boundary of the Heliosphere — •Edward C. Stone — Caltech, Pasadena CA 91125, USA
On August 25, 2012, Voyager 1 entered a layer at the outer boundary of the heliosphere in which the intensity of low energy ions it had observed for the last six years suddenly dropped and soon completely disappeared as the ions streamed into interstellar space. Simultaneously, the intensity of cosmic ray nuclei from outside the heliosphere abruptly increased, suggesting that Voyager 1 had entered interstellar space. However, the direction of the magnetic field did not change, indicating that Voyager 1 is in a boundary layer inside the heliosphere in which the spiral solar magnetic field lines are well connected to interstellar space. The latest Voyager observations from this new region will be discussed.
