Phase retrapping in a ϕ Josephson junction — the butterfly effect — •Edward Goldobin1, Dieter Koelle1, Reinhold Kleiner1, and Roman G. Mints21Universität Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany — 2Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel

We consider retrapping of the phase in a point-like ϕ Josephson junction[1,2] upon switching from a finite voltage state back to a zero-voltage state, i.e. retrapping of a particle moving viscously in a tilted periodic double-well potential when the tilt is adiabatically reduced. We find the dependence of the retrapping current (tilt) γR on the damping parameter α and analyze in which well of the double-well potential the phase is trapped for given α. In the limit of low damping α (low temperature) the system exhibits a butterfly effect — extreme sensitivity of the destination well on the damping α and even on temperature T∝ln(α), which leads to an impossibility to forecast the destination well where the phase will be retrapped.
