Quantitative characterisation of capillary rise in nanoscale systems — •Christian Thome and Heiko Rieger — Theoretische Physik, Universität des Saarlandes, Campus E2 6, D66123 Saarbrücken
Considering fluids in confined nanoscale geometries one finds a strong influence of surface effects. Therefore a closer look at the rise of liquid-air interfaces, also called menisci, in nanometer scale capillaries shows the need of modifications of the macroscopic laws like Lucas Washburn. In addition some experiments on the spontaneous imbibition of water in nano-porous vycor glass showed a broadening of the imbibition front. This phenomenon encouraged us to investigate the capillary rise of a simple Lennard-Jones fluid in nano-pores, nano-pore-junctions and nano-pore-intersections using molecular dynamics simulations. Our main interest is the quantitative characterisation of the influence of the interaction strength between the wall particles and the fluid particles. We present results for the fluid propagation, the interface morphology and fluid density profiles.
