To improve the efficiency of organic bulk heterojunction solar cells, accurate control of the nanoscale morphology is required. Due to phase segregation, controlling the morphology of normal solution-processed semiconductor blends is difficult. ZnO nanoparticles offer a sufficiently high electron affinity to replace the normal absorber in such systems. This study uses UV-Vis absorption and temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements to investigate the optical properties of solution-processed three dimensional networks of ZnO nanoparticles. The covalent links between the ZnO nanoparticles and the bifunctional organic molecules could be observed for two different linker molecules. An organically linked network of ZnO nanoparticles was formed. Linking of nanoparticles with organic molecules yields an new material system which is relatively easy to process and have some promising properties as an absorber in semiorganic bulk heterojunction solar cells.
