We performed measurements on doped helium nanodroplets by VUV-seeded FEL FERMI@Elettra.
In the strong field of the FEL clusters gain large amounts of enegy leading to highly excited and ionized states. Nanoplasma is formed and finally leads to a Coulomb explosion of the cluster. Going to short wavelengths in the XUV range the the plasma formation is not uniform anymore. Utilizing doped clusters we observe strong ionization at the surface while in the center of the cluster plasma formation is reduced due to recombination.
