Investigations on clusters containing transition metals and aliphatic ligands provide the opportunity to study the differences between small molecular systems and nanoscaled particles. The successive aggregation of ligands (e.g. alcohol molecules) and their adsorption products on nickel-dimer-clusters are investigated in a molecular beam experiment. To obtain structural information about the (nickel)2(ethanol)1−3 cluster-cations and the (nickel)2(ethanol)1 anion the frequencies of the OH-stretching vibrations are probed by means of IR-photofragmentation spectroscopy. The structural assignment is performed by comparing the experimental data with calculated frequencies obtained from DFT calculations. The results give insight into both, the structure and reactivity of the nickel aggregates. In case of the isolated cationic (cobalt)3(ethanol)1 and (cobalt)3(ethanol)1(water)1 clusters IR spectra as well as electronic spectra in the VIS region are investigated by applying photodissociation spectroscopy. The experimentally observed spectra serve as probe for theoretical calculations especially on the electronic transitions within the triangular Co trimer metal centre.
