Thin-film solar cells made of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) have reached a high level of both energy conversion efficiency (20.8 %) and commercial cost-effectiveness. Yet a number of aspects remain to be understood and optimized. In this contribution we present a numerical model of a CIGS solar cell being developed in order to investigate the effects of minority carrier collection as well as light-management on the external quantum efficiency (EQE). Experimental data for the latter could be reproduced employing a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Surface-patterning of a solar cell lead to an experimentally observed increase in short-circuit current which could also be simulated successfully.
