Plasmon resonances of noble metal nanostructures are employed for developing sensors used for sensitive detection of molecules. We report on the structuring of arrays of sub-wavelength Au nano-gratings by electron-beam lithography on 20 x 20 mm2 SiO2 wafer pieces coated by a 64-nm thick PMMA resist layer. Sixteen grating arrays were exposed in one run, and the periodicity was varied between 100 nm and 1225 nm from array to array. A typical groove width of W ≈ 16 nm was achieved. After development a 51-nm thick Au layer was evaporated. First measurements of the optical properties show a dip in the reflectance spectrum which moves from 600 to 1000 nm with increasing the periodicity from 400 to 700 nm. The polarization dependance was investigated as well by illuminating the grating with polarized light parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the lines. The result encourages the usage of such functionalized nano-grating surfaces for highly sensitive sensors.
