We numerically investigate electromagnetic field distributions in composite materials. For that purpose, we use a commercial software (CST MICROWAVE STUDIO) to simulate a rectangular waveguide filled with an inhomogeneous medium. This medium consists of a lossy dielectric material, with a volume concentration of about 10%, dispersed in a non-lossy matrix. We simulate different microstructures, from statistical to non statistical (agglomerates) spatial distributions of particles. The simulation gives us simultaneously access to the electromagnetic field and to the effective permittivity (εeff through the S-Parameter). We check the local variation of the electric field and of energy disipation in order to find out, whether so-called hot spots exist.
