Thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements at sub Kelvin temperatures - experiments on the frustrated quantum magnet Cs2CuCl4 — •satya krishna Thallapaka, Bernd Wolf, and Michael Lang — Physikalisches Institut, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (M), SFB/TR49, D-60438 Frankfurt (M), Germany.
We describe the device suitable for high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements using a capacitive dilatometer [1] which measures length changes with a sensitivity of Δl ≥ 10−2 Å, corresponding to a relative resolution of Δl/l ∼ 10−10. The system operates down to 40 mK and in magnetic fields up to 18 T. We report measurements on the spin S = 1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 aiming at exploring its field-induced quantum critical point.
