Field mapping of the KATRIN Pinch Magnet — •Axel Müller for the KATRIN collaboration — Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, IEKP

The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment aims to probe the effective mass of the electron antineutrino in a model-independent way with an unsurpassed sensitivity of 200 meV/c2 (90% C.L.). The energy spectrum of the electrons from Tritium β-decay is analyzed by an electrostatic spectrometer which is based on the MAC-E filter principle. The so-called PINCH magnet - a superconducting solenoid located at the end of the spectrometer - is a crucial part of the MAC-E filter and its field strength of 6 T is directly related to the sensitivity of the experiment. Thus, a clear understanding of its field stability and field map is indispensable for the success of KATRIN.

Along with an overview of the KATRIN experiment and the MAC-E filter principle this poster will present the results of a detailed study of the PINCH magnet’s field map obtained with a 3-axis hall probe.

This work is supported by the BMBF (05A11VK3) and the Helmholtz association.
