The energy loss of transmitted ions from therapeutic ion beams can be used as low dose imaging method. Single particle tracking and range measurement is expected to improve the resolution. A detector system consisting of three Micromegas (MICRO MEsh GAS) detectors has been tested in high-rate proton and carbon-ion beams at the Heidelberger Ionenstrahl-Therapiezentrum. Micromegas are high-rate capable micro-strip gas detectors, originally developed for High Energy Physics experiments.

Single particle tracking was possible for hit rates up to 80 MHz and at all available energies for protons and carbon-ions of up to 230 MeV/u and 430 MeV/u. The detectors ran stably up to the highest rates of 2 GHz. We compare the performance of a resistive strip and a novel floating strip Micromegas and present a Hough transform based method for track reconstruction. We discuss the achieved spatial resolution and high-rate capability.
