Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking as the Origin of the Hot Early Universe — •Valerie Domcke — SISSA, Trieste, Italy
Gauge symmetries have proven to be an invaluable guideline in constructing the Standard Model of particle physics as well as possible extensions. A minimal example of the latter is obtained by gauging B−L, the difference of baryon and lepton number. In this talk, I will discuss how the cosmological realization of the phase transition associated with the spontaneous breaking of B−L can generate the initial conditions for the hot early universe. In particular, I show that entropy, dark matter and a matter-antimatter asymmetry can be produced in accordance with current observations. Moreover, F-term hybrid inflation can be realized in the false vacuum of unbroken B−L. This yields a consistent, complete and calculable scenario for the evolution of the early universe, with all cosmological observables determined by the parameters of a supersymmetric particle physics Lagrangian. I will discuss how this model might be tested by the (non-)observation of cosmic strings, gravitational waves as well as relations between the neutrino and superparticle mass spectrum.
