Energy reconstruction of νµ in charged current interactions in DeepCore — Rolf Nahnhauer, •Andrii Terliuk, and Juan Pablo Yanez for the IceCube collaboration — DESY, Zeuthen, Germany
DeepCore is a sub-array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory which lowers the detector’s threshold to about 10 GeV. It allows to study particle physics topics like measuring atmospheric neutrino oscillations and performing WIMPs searches. These studies would profit from the reconstruction of the neutrino energy below 100 GeV,
A procedure to reconstruct the full energy of a νµ in charged current interaction is presented. An existing method for determining the range of a muon is combined with a novel likelihood that describes the point where the neutrino interacts. The combination of these methods gives an energy resolution of around 38 % for 10 GeV neutrinos, and improving with energy. A study where the method has been successfully applied is also discussed.
