A 3-polarization MHz antenna for detecting radio emission of extensive air showers with the Auger Engineering Radio Array — •Raphael Krause, Martin Erdmann, Christian Glaser, and Klaus Weidenhaupt for the Pierre Auger collaboration — III. Physikalisches Institut A, RWTH Aachen University, Germany

Extensive air showers originating from ultra-high energy cosmic rays show emission of electromagnetic signals in the radio frequency range. The radiation pattern gives information about the primary cosmic ray, e.g. arrival direction, mass and energy. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) has been setup with 124 radio stations in May 2013 and is taking data. For five of these radio stations, the original antennas for measuring horizontally polarized signals have been extended with a new third antenna to observe in addition the vertical polarization component of the electric field. With the new 3-polarization antennas, the sensitivity of the radio stations increases towards signals coming from the horizon. Here, a unique potential of the radio measurement technique is expected for extended air showers owing to the small attenuation of radio waves in the atmosphere. We present simulations of the new antenna characteristics and air shower measurements from the Argentine pampa.
