A sampling hadron calorimeter (HCAL) for a future linear collider is developed by the CALICE collaboration based on the particle flow concept. For compactness, the HCAL active layers consist of scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). With the high granularity stringently requested by the particle flow concept, the HCAL can provide unprecedented jet energy resolution and will need a large number of scintillator tiles and SiPMs. Motivated by the need for an automated assembly of the HCAL, we have developed a design of surface mounted SiPMs directly air-coupled with tiles dimpled in a specific geometry for a uniform SiPM response. We present experimental measurements of uniformity scans for this design and comparisons with the GEANT4 full simulation.
