Simulation and Measurement of electric field emission of the KATRIN spectrometers — •Johannes Ding for the KATRIN collaboration — Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Institut für Kernphysik
The Karlsruher Tritium Neutrino Experiment KATRIN will determine the mass of the electron anti-neutrino with a sensitivity of 200 meV/c2 (90% C.L.) by measuring the tritium-beta-decay spectrum near its endpoint. The energy-analysis is done with an electrostatic filter employing the MAC-E-filter spectrometer principle. To reach the design sensitivity, the total background rate may not exceed 10−2 counts per second.
One measure taken to shield the spectrometer from secondary electron emission originating from the vessel is to operate the wire electrode system on a more negative potential than the hull. However, the resulting electric field can lead to electric field emission.
Therefore it is very important to understand the phenomenon of electric field emission at the KATRIN spectrometers. This talk will discuss the different measurements and simulations, which were performed both at the monitor and the main spectrometer of the KATRIN experiment to fulfil this task.
