Measurement of the top quark mass using jet angles — •Angela Burger, Stefanie Adomeit, and Otmar Biebel — LS-Schaile, LMU München

In the top quark mass measurement one of the major sources of systematic uncertainty arises from the uncertainty on the jet energy scale. Thus, an alternative method for determining the top quark mass with a reduced sensitivity to the measured jet energies is introduced. This method is based on the measurement of the angles between the jets from the top quark decay which can be determined much more precisely than the jet energies.

The invariant mass ratio of the reconstructed top quark and W boson mtop/mW can be evaluated by measuring the angles between jets in the tt restframe only. However, the angles in the restframe cannot be measured directly as the top quarks are usually boosted with respect to the laboratory frame. Therefore, a small dependence on the jet energy remains due to the transformation of the measured jet angles to the angles in the tt restframe. In order to reduce or eliminate the dependence on the jet energies, studies based on Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to investigate the functional dependence between the measured top quark mass and the boost.
