Calculation of the Cherenkov Light Yield of Ultra-High-Energetic Particle Cascades in Ice — •Ömer Penek, Leif Rädel, and Christopher Wiebusch for the IceCube collaboration — III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen
Charged particles which move faster than the speed of light through a dielectric emit Cherenkov light due to the polarization of the medium. The number of photons emitted by a single track per unit path length is described by the well-known Frank-Tamm formula. In view of the recently observed PeV neutrino interactions with IceCube, we investigate the effects of high particle densities close to the interaction point. Here, we do not assume a simple independent superposition of photons emitted by each track, but also take into account that the polarization regions of different tracks may overlap.
