The NA62 experiment — •Gia Khoriauli — Institut für Physik, Universität Mainz
NA62 is a fixed target experiment at CERN, which will operate on the 400 GeV proton beam supplied by the CERN SPS accelerator facility already in 2014. The main physics task of the experiment is to perform a very precise measurement of the rate of the rare kaon decay, K+ → π+νν. This channel is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model while it is very sensitive to possible new physics phenomena. The main challenge of the experiment is the achievement of high background suppression. The NA62 sub-detectors provide good abilities to reject kaon decays into π0 and µ as well as a high efficiency in discrimination of electrons and charged pions. The expected signal over background ratio is 10:1. The experiment shall achieve a 10% accuracy on the measured decay rate in two years of data taking. We review the ongoing preparatory work on the different sub-systems of the experiment. The contribution of the working group from the University of Mainz is highlighted.
