The radio emission from energetic particle cascades: confusion and solution — •Clancy James1 and Tim Huege2 — 1Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics (ECAP), Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erwin-Rommel-Str. 1, 91058 Erlangen, Germany — 2Karlsruhe Institute for Technology - Campus North - Institut für Kernphysik, Karlsruhe, Germany
The radio-emission from high-energy particles traversing a medium has only recently been understood, despite all the information being contained within the theory of classical electromagnetism. In this talk, I will explain the problems with applying standard methods to the calculation of the radiated electromagnetic fields from particle cascades in the atmosphere and dense media. I present a solution, which turns out to be simple and intuitive, and allows the complete calculation of radiation for diverse experiments such as air-shower measurements with the LOFAR telescope and the AERA array at the Pierre Auger Observatory, and searches for high-energy neutrino interactions at the South Pole (ANITA) and on the Moon (NuMoon and LUNASKA).
